Information
for Relatives

It is never easy being the loved one of an elderly parent or parents. There is an inversion of the usual relationship between parent and child and can be quite awkward for everyone concerned. Nevertheless, the most important thing you can do is to start talking.

Having a conversation is the essential first step towards ensuring the long term health and well-being of your elderly relatives.

The Government recognises that most elderly people would be happier and healthier in their own homes, with any necessary supports, rather than moving into a nursing home. This is precisely why the Home Care Packages Program was established.

Ask where they would like to live? How long for? How are they going with that? What would make it easier? What obstacles do they face? Are they still driving? How much longer for? Other transportation options?

Would a mower man make life a lot easier for them?
How about someone to help with cleaning for a couple of hours a week?
Would a hand rail help with the steps?
How about non slip surfaces in their shower and toilet?
What about a driver to take them to appointments or shopping or bingo?

These are just a small sample of the services that Aston Home Care can provide. If your relatives qualify for a home care package then these services may be available at no out-of-pocket charge. Often this older generation good but deserves its own paragraph.

“ I paid for a regular mower man for my fathers birthday present and he refused to let him in. Much later when dad was offered a mower man which was paid for by the government he gladly accepted. “

If your relatives agree that even one of the above services may make their lives easier you have overcome a major hurdle. The next step is to contact their GP or to contact Aston Home Care. This will lead to an ACAT assessment. A specialist nurse will make an appointment and visit them in their own home. This determines if they qualify for a Home Care package, what level it will be, and what types of services they need. There will be a waiting period before the Home Care package is delivered. Sometimes this can be awhile, but no need to panic, Aston Home Care can ask for a lower level package whilst awaiting for the full service. Or we can start to deliver some of the services as a private client whilst waiting. This does mean paying for the services.

Keeping your relatives in their own home longer often leads to a happier and better outcome than entering into a new environment.
